Some schools have designed programs for warehouse workers, in response to the high demand for education that focuses specifically on logistics. Kathleen Hedland is the director of research and education for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. She states that companies want their employees to know how they affect customers, and the ways in which actions taken by one department may impact other departments.
The degree options vary but the majority of them comprise fundamental courses that teach basic concepts such as operations and supply chain management, procurement, transportation and distribution networks, warehousing and inventory management, as well as business fundamentals. Some universities also offer specializations, such as e-commerce, retail logistics, transportation and logistical analysis global logistics management and others.
Graduates are able to work in roles such as supply chain managers, logisticians buying agents industrial production managers and distribution managers. They can also pursue certifications such as the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to improve their career prospects.
Be sure to check if the institution is accredited. This is done by a group such as the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These organisations recognize 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Additionally, look for a college that has an adequate student-to-teacher ratio, since it will ensure that you receive high-quality instruction.
Some colleges offer online or hybrid programs that combine classroom instruction with virtual learning opportunities. This kind of format is attractive to employees with an unstructured schedule and are unable or unwilling to attend traditional classes. Some online-only courses offer certificates or associate’s degrees, while others offer master’s and bachelor’s degrees.
